PUERTO PRINCIPE CARMEL (HAITI) SURVIVES THE EARTHQUAKE
Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Haiti: “We are safe and sound”
Communicationes
Puerto Principe (2010-01-08).- Late yesterday evening, Sr. Jacqueline Marie of the Trinity, Prioress of the Monastery of our Carmelite nuns in Puerto Principe (Haiti), confirmed that all the sisters of the community were “safe and sound”.
All communications with the monastery had been cut off following the horrific earthquake of 12 January. Added to the uncertainty caused by this breakdown of communications with the nuns themselves, were conflicting reports from different sources regarding the fate of the monastery.
It was only five days after the tragedy that all doubts could be discounted. Sr. Jacqueline was able to contact her sister and Fr. Robert Paul, General Definitor, assuring them that “thanks be to God, we are all safe and sound”. She asked that “you continue praying for the tragic situation in the whole country”.
This morning (18 January) the Regional Vicar for the Caribbean, Fr. Francisco Javier Mena, reported from the neighbouring Dominican Republic that all three sisters in the community Jacqueline Marie, Therese Benedict and Marie Therese, were well and that the monastery was unharmed. Fr. Mena had been in touch with a Carmelite teaching sister, IneƒVs del Mercado, who had reported to him directly from Puerto Principe.
Solidarity with Haiti
The Secretary General for the Missions, Fr. Julio Almansa, has set up a special Bank Account to facilitate those who wish to assist and donate money and have been in contact with the General Curia in Rome. All funds donated to this account will be directed towards the help of our Carmelite Community in Haiti and other people affected by the catastrophe.
